      The one used on the foundation Mandarin course I did at university was Chinese: An Essential Grammar, by Yip Po-Ching and Don Rimmington. I don't know whether it's the best (nothing to compare it with) but it's clear and seems pretty comprehensive. With other language studies, even 'concise' overviews of grammar have always seemed pretty long to me. Therefore, rather than putting you to sleep by trying to cover everything, in this section we'll just give you a head start on some elements of Chinese grammar that .
